Proposed Revisions to the Emergency Management Chapter Requirements for the Behavioral Health Care and Human Services Program (BHC) Field Review

The Joint Commission is revising its “Emergency Management” (EM) requirements for accredited Behavioral Health and Human Services programs. The emergency management chapter requirements will be released in July 2025.

A brief overview of the revisions:

  • The primary goal of the revisions is to streamline the chapter to be more cohesive and concise which has resulted in a complete rewrite and restructure of the emergency management (EM) chapter.
  • The new and revised emergency management standards will help these organizations develop and improve their actions and responses to emergencies or disasters.
  • The EM chapter continues to address preparedness, mitigation, response, and recovery.

Additional focus has been placed on areas such as leadership roles and responsibilities, use of the hazards vulnerability analysis, as well as providing EM-related education and training to staff.

Your participation and feedback on these draft standards will be extremely valuable in helping The Joint Commission further update and strengthen the “Emergency Management” chapter requirements.

Comments on these proposed requirements will be gathered through October 4, 2024. Thank you in advance for your time and thoughtful responses.
